You wish to have a dot com domain name unless you will find immensely overriding reasons not to get one ending in dot com. People don’t think about web page addresses ending in dot net. All of the search engines default to dot com. Before you determine to get a domain name that doesn’t end “.com” (probably because it’s taken), type the dot com name in the browser, to visit the site. See what your website is. Oftentimes the name is merely’parked’and it may be for sale. That is a whole other topic to go over so I won’t get into it here. If this is the case, though, contact me or another consultant to find out your options for possibly purchasing it. Also, you may not wish to have any dashes (hyphens) in the domain name.
Hosting could be something of a puzzle to the uninitiated. Think of it like this… You have a car, but it’s to really have a steady supply of fuel to go places. Hosting could be the fuel for your domain. You pay a hosting company to keep your internet site visible on the Internet. Hosting companies charge monthly fees which are usually discounted when paid annually.
Whoever builds your internet site should submit it to the three main search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN/Bing included in the deal. They handle about 95% of searches. Google alone garners 65% of search activity.

It’s common for individuals to have a web page built, and then find so it doesn’t do anything. They believe it’s broken. Building it and setting it up on the Internet is one part. Getting the search engines to locate it so people can visit is another part. Often the one who builds your website doesn’t do any optimization. Sometimes they are able to (meaning they understand how to), however it is considered another’competency’or’deliverable ‘. In other words, SEO costs extra. And it should. Search engine optimization is a very specialized field. The folks who do SEO well often specialize in doing only SEO. It is intense work, methods for effectiveness may change rapidly; therefore the practitioners must keep themselves educated, which takes time and money.
Nevertheless, basic se optimization must be prepared for all sites. And it doesn’t take a PhD to complete it. If your online designer/builder doesn’t understand how to achieve this, or doesn’t might like to do it, you will need to locate a person who does. It is common practice for consultants/web designers to register your internet site through their own account and start work once you have entered into an agreement with them. In many cases, this is done to expedite the procedure, to not deceive or take advantage of you.
Require a printout from WhoIs which shows the name and contact information of the registered owner, your website administrator and the technical advisor. If you may not appear since the registered owner, ask the consultant to transfer the domain, at no cost, to you. There is usually no cost from the registrar (GoDaddy, NameCheap etc.) to achieve this transfer. Transferring the name is just a simple procedure. Doing it NOW will prevent lots of headaches and legal hassles down the road. Once they say the transfer is performed, get written verification for your records.
Type in your domain name at the the top of page where it says “start a domain search “.When the page arises showing that domain is taken, click onto the “click here for info” link that appears right after the domain name. You may want to type in a verification code (uniquely generated every time the page appears), then submit. The information that appears with this final page could be the name and contact information for the registered owner of the site. If you’re not on it, you never own it.
Along with well-known ownership issues, you will find other reasons to really have the domain in your name. You wish to be notified when the renewal comes due (this date will appear on the WhoIs info); if the domain name isn’t renewed, it becomes available and can be available to the public in 30-60 days after the renewal date. The domain you’ve spent time and energy integrating into your company is going to be purchased by another person and it is going to be gone forever. Unfortunately, many people see themselves in the career of having a web page up and running and their relationship with the consultant is becoming significantly less than optimum, or worse, nonexistent. In this instance, contact the registrar (GoDaddy, Network Solutions, etc.) and look for their protocol. It is my understanding that circumstances may exist wherein ownership may be transferred.
